Guest Ted Posted March 4, 2011 at 05:45 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 05:45 PM Our club has called a special meeting to Vote on a issue. They have sent out an agenda and list several officers to speak on the issue. Then Vote. Then discussion afterwards. We want the discussion prior to the Vote. No discussion prior to the Vote...is that inaccordance with Roberts Rules??
George Mervosh Posted March 4, 2011 at 05:50 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 05:50 PM It seems there will be debate - "several officers to speak" but no rule limits the debate to those officers only.
tctheatc Posted March 4, 2011 at 08:36 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 08:36 PM See FAQ 14. Presumably you'll have the opportunity to vote on the agenda and you can move to allow discussion before the vote.
George Mervosh Posted March 4, 2011 at 08:39 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 08:39 PM See FAQ 14. Presumably you'll have the opportunity to vote on the agenda and you can move to allow discussion before the vote. Why would they move to do something the rules require to begin with? The notice is hogwash, since it can't dictate the debating rules.

No discussion prior to the Vote...is that inaccordance with Roberts Rules??I agree with George. The rules of debate are set, and except under Suspension of the Rules, cannot be modified. They certainly cannot be modified by a mere notice, which puts this firmly in the hogwash category.Debate is in order before the vote. Discussion is not in order after the vote. So that's the way it has to be done. If it's not, then raise a Point of Order, and be prepared to Appeal it.
tctheatc Posted March 4, 2011 at 09:13 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 09:13 PM You're both right. Point of Order is the far better option. Thanks.
David A Foulkes Posted March 4, 2011 at 09:20 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2011 at 09:20 PM I agree with George. So that's the way it has to be done. If it's not, then raise a Point of Order, and be prepared to Appeal it.And until then, start making calls to members to let them know what's going on. With luck, you'll get a majority to vote with you (in the negative) on the Appeal. You'll need it. And make sure the Chair phrases it correctly.
