Can an officer maintain his current posiiton if he decides to run for another position without resigning the current position? If he loses the position he ran for and loses, can he go back to his original position?

What page, 425?

[i threw that in to secure my First Responder place. It's a higher pay grade.]

1. Robert's Rules says there is "no prohibition," although it is generally "understood in most societies that a member can serve on only one such capacity at a time, and sometimes the bylaws so provide." So the answer is No, unless the bylaws prohibit it, or unless there is that general understanding, and flouting that understanding would lead to crocodile service.

2. If he kept the original position, of course he has not lost it; if he did resign, though, he has no lingering claim on the position.

Nothing in RONR requires him resign his office in order to run for another one (although practically speaking a VP would have to resign his office if elected to President). Your bylaws may say otherwise.

If he loses the position he ran for and loses, can he go back to his original position?

If your bylaws require an officer resign his office in order to run for another one and he loses his bid for said office there is nothing in RONR that prohibits someone who resigned from an office from being elected right back to it.

a. Yes. Example: Barack Obama, who did not resign his Senate seat until after the election.

b. Yes, if he didn't resign. Example: John McCain, who returned to the Senate after the election.
