Guest Cindy Posted May 14, 2012 at 12:59 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2012 at 12:59 PM When nominations are held is it within RONR for a candidate to make a short speech to introduce themselves and state why they would like the post? I assume nominations/elections are debatable and fall under the Rules for Debate/Speech Limits in Debate. We have no by-laws regarding this issue. Clarifications are greatly appreciated. George Mervosh Posted May 14, 2012 at 01:14 PM Report Share Posted May 14, 2012 at 01:14 PM Nominations ARE debatable and they do fall under the rules governing debate. The nominees and members present may debate the qualifications or lack thereof of each nominee. (RONR, 11th ed, tinted page 18, motion 49)
Gary Novosielski Posted May 18, 2012 at 01:38 AM Report Share Posted May 18, 2012 at 01:38 AM I would suggest that the person making the nomination would have the right to speak first in debate, if he so chooses. But the nominee could seek recognition for the purpose of "debating" his own qualifications, too.
