Voted in Position now wants different position

Our recording secretary's term was up and she wanted to stay on no one volunteered so at our last meeting she was re-elected for another 2 year term. Our VP position was not filled and now she would rather have that position.

Do we allow the switch? We would have to bring it to a vote but she did just commit to a new 2 year term.

I'm unsure what to do any help you could provide would be great!

There is no RONR-endorsed way to switch elective positions.

I suppose she could resign the rec-sec job and lobby (somehow) to be selected to fill the vacant VP position. Check the bylaws to see how vacancies are filled. Of course, this entails risk - she might not get the job. And then you'll still have to fill the Rec-Sec position.

Unless the bylaws prohibit it why not throw her hat in the ring for VP (while staying on as Rec Sec) and if she is elected she could resign as Rec Sec (or keep both offices if the bylaws don't prohibit holding more than one office)? Of course, if she holds both offices and a vacancy becomes open in the Presidency she would automatically move up to President (unless the bylaws have a specific vacancy filling procedure for President) creating a vacancy in the office of VP. She probably should then resign as Rec Sec as well because she will have her hands full enough being just President which would mean that you would have to fill the vacancy for Rec Sec and VP.

Well, yes, she did commit to a new 2-year term, but it's not carved in granite. You should continue to try to fill the VP position by continuing the election of VP until it is completed. The secretary is free to run for that position, unless some rule of yours prohibits it. RONR doesn't have such a rule.

If she wins the VP position, she can (and, if your rules require it, must) submit her resignation from the secretary position, which is effectively a request to be excused from the 2-year term that she committed to earlier.

The board grants the request by accepting her resignation, which relieves her of the commitment. .
