Chris Harrison Posted September 10, 2012 at 05:38 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2012 at 05:38 PM Then depending on how the bylaws define the Secretary's term of office the current Secretary would continue in office until someone is elected or when the term is over the office falls vacant. In either case you all should do everything humanly possible to get someone to accept the office. For example, look for what you all can do to sweeten the pot to get a current member to serve as Secretary, or if the bylaws require the Secretary be a member do some aggressive recruiting of people who would be willing to serve as Secretary then make them a member and elect them as Secretary. If the bylaws don't require the Secretary be a member and all else fails you all could hire a nonmember to serve as Secretary.
Gary Novosielski Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:15 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:15 PM If no one will run for secretary, then it's questionable whether your membership is committed enough for your society to survive.Hold a meeting for the purpose of discussing whether the society should dissolve. Guest Edgar Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:19 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2012 at 08:19 PM And in the meantime you'll elect a secretary pro tem (a temporary secretary) at the start of each meeting to serve until the meeting is adjourned. Mr Novosielski's (thankfully, that's easier to spell than "Gary", although to be fair, I myself have incidentally had more practice) position brings up a thought. People are often reluctant to run for secretary because the organization makes the job harder and more tedious than it really needs to. If the organization demands that the minutes include some of the yakking, instead of properly leaving it out, then a real secretary might demand that the organization leave it to a recording secretary, archivist, or credentialed lunatic to take down all the gibberish that the members flatter themselves constitutes "debate" if they want to publish an Adventure Story of the Society's Meeting, separately from the real and, sigh, comparatively frumpish minutes. Gary c Tesser Posted September 12, 2012 at 03:01 AM Report Share Posted September 12, 2012 at 03:01 AM What if no one runs for President and the Treasurer takes President. Can she also keep the treasurers office?:\Umm, how did she "take[] President"? In the late Roman Empire, it was usually by assassination; but these days that's considered bad form. But there's nothing in Robert's Rules to prohibit one person from holding both offices of President and Treasurer, except when I get it wrong like last week. Glad to help.
