Guest Edgar Posted December 8, 2012 at 01:40 AM Report Share Posted December 8, 2012 at 01:40 AM How is this position to be filled?By holding (or continuing to hold) the election anyway. All it takes is for one member to write in a name on a ballot (and for no one to vote for anyone else), and you've got yourselves a new secretary (assuming the lucky winner is willing to serve if elected). If no one (nominated or not) wants to be secretary, you've got to figure out why not. How is this position to be filled?Well, if the secretary's term is up and time for election, you have to hold an election. Keep trying. If anyone is agreeable to be secretary, they can even nominate themselves. If no one wants the job, it might be helpful to find out why. Perhaps there's a misconception of what is entailed, or maybe you have placed too many unnecessary duties on the secretary, which might require a bylaw change if those duties are spelled out in there. Either way, you have to elect someone, if you can. Until then, a secretary pro tem will need to be elected at each meeting until the election is completed, so someone's going to have to do it. If the society's bylaws provide that officers "shall hold office for a term of . . . year(s) or [or "and"] until their successors are elected.", the current Secretary would remain in office until the election is completed, assuming the current Secretary won't abandon their duties until that time. g40 Posted December 8, 2012 at 07:43 PM Report Share Posted December 8, 2012 at 07:43 PM I suggest considering why there are no volunteers/nominees. Perhaps doing the minutes has been made more difficult than needed because of a misunderstanding of what minutes are and should be. Check RONR for sample. Minutes should reflect what was DONE and NOT what was SAID. Perhaps folks in the organization could aggressively recruit a Secretary as well.
