Guest Penny Posted June 5, 2014 at 05:22 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 05:22 PM If the bylaws of an organization are silent on how to connect an election, can you have a one vote by the secretary if it states so in the standing rules? Timothy Posted June 5, 2014 at 06:28 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 06:28 PM Yes, but I don't see why it would be necessary when the bylaws are silent, since the assembly could just as easily conduct the election using the same method they would vote to instruct the secretary on how to vote. Gary Novosielski Posted June 5, 2014 at 06:57 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 06:57 PM And why wouldn't that have to be at least a Special Rule of Order? (In any case, I agree it's an antiquated custom not worth preserving, but i'm just sayin'.)

Yes, but this is an ill-advised rule and you should get rid of it as soon as possible. And why wouldn't that have to be at least a Special Rule of Order? If you're really interested, there is a lengthy debate on this topic here.
Thomas Ralph Posted June 6, 2014 at 06:15 AM Report Share Posted June 6, 2014 at 06:15 AM The practice of having the secretary cast one unopposed ballot for a "slate" is not one that should be maintained.
Rev Ed Posted June 6, 2014 at 02:30 PM Report Share Posted June 6, 2014 at 02:30 PM I concur with others, get rid of this rule. If the organization, through its By-laws, do not want to require a ballot vote, then just allow unopposed candidates be declared elected via acclamation.
