Guest Guest Posted August 25, 2014 at 12:44 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 12:44 PM Our organization votes for a delegate and an alternate to represent us in the larger group. Do both positions need to be nominated and elected seperately, or is the alternate merely the runner up in the election? Our bylaws make no provisions for this. Also, should one of the nominees withdraw prior to the election, is it neccessary to reopen nominations, or is this reopening still subject to a 3/4 majority to take place. Edgar Guest Posted August 25, 2014 at 12:50 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 12:50 PM The runner-up is not the automatic alternate. Reopening nominations is optional. Nothing in RONR requires a three-fourths vote.
Timothy Posted August 25, 2014 at 02:37 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 02:37 PM The two positions should be handled separately. The criteria people use for selecting an alternate is often different from what they use to select the first.

Since the runner up could not possibly have received a majority of the votes, that would not be appropriate. A separate election is necessary, or at least separate listings on the ballot for the two offices. Reopening nominations requires only a majority vote. Where did you come across this 3/4 requirement?
