Voting

We are having a vote and I would like for it to be by voice only.  If someone request that we have a ballet vote do I have to do one?  Or as moderator can I make it voice only?  Thanks

Any member may move to take a vote by ballot.  The motion to take a vote by ballot must be seconded, is not debatable and requires a majority vote for adoption unless it is agreed to by unanimous consent.

 

Here is a quote from RONR on methods of voting from page 288:

 

"METHODS OF VOTING. In practice, the method of taking a vote usually can be agreed upon informally. But when different methods are suggested, they are usually treated not as amendments but as filling blanks, the vote normally being [page 285] taken first on the one taking the most time. (For ways of voting, see pp. 44–54; 45.)
 

A member who believes that a secret vote will give a truer expression of the assembly's will on a pending motion can move that the vote on the motion be taken by ballot."

Also, when a voice vote is taken, any member who doubts the result may demand that the vote be taken again by rising (although it remains to the chair to decide whether the vote needs to be counted, unless the assembly, by majority vote, orders a count).

Just to amplify what Shmuel said:  a member can yell out "Division!" to have the rising (standing) vote.
