President Absent due to illness

When the president falls ill, and can no longer serve, the Vice steps in to temporarly fulfill the duties. When does a special election need to be held, ot does the Vice fulfill the duties until the next scheduled election?

Until the President submits his resignation and it is properly accepted, the VP will preside at meetings as there is no vacancy. The VP will have no other powers of the President found in your bylaws unless the bylaws specifically provide that he will.

If the president does not resign, what then?

If the president does not resign, and is not removed for incapacity, then he remains president until his term expires--or he does.

But if any of those things occur, the VP becomes president, without the need for a special election, and serves for the unexpired remainder of the term.

You might, however, need a special election to fill the vacancy in the VP spot, if that's how your society fillls vacancies.
