Bookish Posted June 3, 2016 at 04:48 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2016 at 04:48 PM The Board is voting for Nominating Committee members - Bylaws call for 3 members and 2 alternates. After the initial vote, 2 committee members were chosen and a tie ensured for the 3rd committee position. After 2 additional votes there is still a tie for the last position on the committee between 2 nominees, how can the tie be broken?

You can keep voting in the hopes that someone will change his vote. You can re-open nominations with the hope that someone more popular will be nominated. The candidates can agree among themselves that they will flip a coin to see which one will voluntarily withdraw (or announce that he no longer wishes to be elected to the office). You can suspend the rules and adopt a motion that the candidate with the smallest number of votes will be dropped from the ballot. I believe you could also suspend the rules and adopt a motion to determine the winner of the tie by lot, but others may disagree. Stay tuned.
