no nominations for an office

if you have not had a vice president for a year and with new elections someone agrees to nomination as vice president, when elected are they automatically president?  The term is one year as vice president and the next year as president.  This is of concern since the person has never attended a meeting.

Guest Cheryl, EXACTLY what do your bylaws say about the vice president and president, at least with regard to how one becomes president, the vice president automatically becoming president, etc. There may be pertinent language in the section on officers and/or elections.  Please quote exactly, don't paraphrase.

Also, is this person to be elected at the regular annual elections, or is he being elected prior to the regular elections to fill the vacancy in the office of the vice president?

The office of Vice President will be elected annually.  The Vice President will assume to office of President the following year.  There is nothing else in the constitution about the election of officers.  This person was elected at the regular annual elections.  There has been no special elections.

Guest Who's Coming to Dinner

You have a custom rule in your bylaws and so it's up to your society to decide what it means and how to apply it. If there is controversy, raise a point of order, let the chair rule, then appeal if you don't like the ruling.

Your situation may be complicated by the answer to this question: did the preceding Vice President leave office during the first year or was no one elected until now?

If it's of concern, why couldn't you elect someone else?
