Guest Scotty Posted June 19, 2018 at 04:39 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2018 at 04:39 PM Our current Recording Secretary, who has 2yrs of a 3yr term left, has been nominated by the Nominating Committee for Corresponding Secretary (the current Cor Sec's term is over and they have decided not to run for a second 3yr term). Another current officer is stating that the Recording Sec needs to resign before accepting the nomination, although nothing in the bylaws states that a current office or board member can't run for another position. My understanding and the way we have handled this in the past, is that if a current officer or board member is elected to another office, they then resign their current position after the election and before accepting the new position to which they were just elected. Then the new board fills the vacant position per the terms of the bylaws Thank you
George Mervosh Posted June 19, 2018 at 04:49 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2018 at 04:49 PM (edited) Nothing in Robert's Rules requires a member to resign from their present office to seek a new one, if that's your question. Guest Scotty Posted June 19, 2018 at 05:00 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2018 at 05:00 PM Thanks, that was my question in a nutshell and is what we thought
Bruce Lages Posted June 19, 2018 at 06:34 PM Report Share Posted June 19, 2018 at 06:34 PM In fact, nothing in Robert's Rules would prevent the Recording Secretary from also being elected and serving as Corresponding Secretary.

A person can wait for the results of the election before deciding whether to resign or not. In fact, unless you have rules prohibiting one person from holding multiple offices, and if the person is willing to perform both roles, which may be unlikely, the resignation is optional. When someone makes claims like this, ask to see the rule in writing. More often than not, as in this case, there is no such rule in RONR.
