Alexander George Posted June 5, 2020 at 04:14 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 at 04:14 PM Hello, everyone. If the body is presented with a motion that contains several parts (to be voted en bloc), can someone move to divide the motion into its parts and to vote on each part separately? Thanks. George Mervosh Posted June 5, 2020 at 04:38 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 at 04:38 PM It's possible. See RONR (11th ed.), p. 270ff §27. DIVISION OF A QUESTION for the complete rules regarding this subject.
Rob Elsman Posted June 5, 2020 at 06:45 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 at 06:45 PM Certainly, I agree with Mr. Mervosh that Division of the Question is the proper motion to use if the text is easily divisible without more than the most simple and obvious editing. It often happens, however, that this kind of division of the text is not possible, in which case, much the same thing can be accomplished by moving to Amend the main motion, one time or more, by striking out the objectionable paragraphs. Each motion to Amend will be debatable and amendable. The adoption of the primary amendment will have much the same effect as the rejection of a corresponding part of the divided main motion. Nathan Zook Posted June 5, 2020 at 06:55 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 at 06:55 PM What also sometimes happens is that the items in the motion address different subjects entirely. In this case, any member may demand to divide the question, either by calling for the separate consideration of the problematic item(s), or to consider the entire package seriatim. See RONR (11th ed), pp 110, 274-75) Sections 10 and 27.
