When should our club (membership 350) require the Board to get a vote from the general membership on an expenditure.  Should there be a maximum amount (ie; $500) before approval of the expense?

There is nothing in Roberts rules of order on this subject.

Maybe there are answers in your bylaws.

Maybe In other older motions that are still in effect (like budgets)

Maybe there are rules governing this sort of expenditure in law , (is it an expenditure or an investment, can it be seen as a breach of de fiduciary duty of the board?)

If you are a boardmember you can make a motion that the membership should decide, that would be the safest option.

Mr. Huynh correctly answered your question.  It is up to your organization to ddetermine at what point (if any) membership approval of an expenditure should be required.
