Guest Ann Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:28 PM Report Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:28 PM Can the chair call the previous question? If he does and you want more debate what should you do.Thanks
George Mervosh Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:32 PM Report Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:32 PM No, the chair can ask if the members "are ready for the question" and if they want to continue to debate they just continue to seek recognition and do so.See FAQ#11 which applies to all members.
Rev Ed Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:59 PM Report Posted March 29, 2011 at 04:59 PM If the Chairman believes that everyone who has had a chance to speak has done so, he/she can ask "Unless anyone objects, debate is closed ..." If someone stands up, raises his/her hand, etc. to make it clear that the member wishes to debate the issue, then debate continues. However, the Chairman does not allow debate continue, then an immediate Point of Order would be in order. If the Chairman rules against the Point of Order, an appeal can occur.
Chris Harrison Posted March 29, 2011 at 05:17 PM Report Posted March 29, 2011 at 05:17 PM And if this is a Small Board situation (RONR pp. 470-471) where the Chair can participate as freely as any other member he can move the Previous Question but the assembly still has to vote and if 2/3 are not in favor of stopping debate then debate continues.
