For example, shouldn't they contact members from a membership listing by phone to ask if they wish to run for office? Please advise, Thanx
jstackpo Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:44 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:44 PM Basically, the "role" is to find folks willing, able, and competent to serve in various offices. Not always an easy job...There might be further details and requirements in your association's bylaws -- check them. Guest Edgar Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:50 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2011 at 01:50 PM shouldn't they contact members from a membership listing by phone to ask if they wish to run for office?Well, if you're suggesting that they should ask every member, I'd say no.If a member wants to run for office and is not selected by the nominating committee, he can be nominated "from the floor". He can even nominate himself.

For example, shouldn't they contact members from a membership listing by phone to ask if they wish to run for office? Please advise, ThanxThe role of the nominating committee is to make nominations. The persons nominated by the committee are those whom the committee has agreed are the best qualified for the offices. A lot of time can be saved if the committee will have contacted the persons in advance to determine that they will serve, if elected. There is little point in going through the whole nomination/election procedure only to find out at the end that the winner was never willing to accept the office in the first place. For example, shouldn't they contact members from a membership listing by phone to ask if they wish to run for office? Please advise, ThanxRONR doesn't mandate any such procedure, and personally I think it would be a colossal waste of time to contact everyone on the membership list. The nominating committee should be composed of people who the membership believes are best qualified to select and evaluate potential nominees. It is less usual, but not unheard of, for the bylaws to go into some detail about the procedures to be used, but if not, then the committee is free to use its best judgment.Of course they should contact their final choice(s) to ensure they would accept the office if elected, but that's just common sense, not a rule in RONR. And additional nominations from the floor are permitted after the report of the nominating committee is read.
