mcfarland Posted January 29, 2015 at 10:43 AM Report Share Posted January 29, 2015 at 10:43 AM If a vote is taken, and members do not vote "yes" or "no" and they do not declare they are abstaining, is their vote (no vote) counted in the tally? Thanks.
Dan Honemann Posted January 29, 2015 at 11:17 AM Report Share Posted January 29, 2015 at 11:17 AM See FAQ # 6. Abstentions are not votes, and therefore are not counted when counting the number of votes cast.
Hieu H. Huynh Posted January 29, 2015 at 12:51 PM Report Share Posted January 29, 2015 at 12:51 PM In addition, RONR says the following: "The chair should not call for abstentions in taking a vote, since the number of members who respond to such a call is meaningless. To "abstain" means not to vote at all, and a member who makes no response if "abstentions" are called for abstains just as much as one who responds to that effect" (RONR 11th ed., p. 45, ll. 14-18)
Gary Novosielski Posted January 29, 2015 at 01:34 PM Report Share Posted January 29, 2015 at 01:34 PM If a vote is taken, and members do not vote "yes" or "no" and they do not declare they are abstaining, is their vote (no vote) counted in the tally? Thanks. There is no need to declare anything. If they do not vote, then they have abstained from voting, regardless of any declaration they might or might not make.
