JorgieHts Posted November 17, 2016 at 04:46 PM Report Share Posted November 17, 2016 at 04:46 PM Our bylaws indicate that the Nominations Committee is to present a slate of candidates/nominees at the November meeting. Voting takes place at the December meeting. The Nominations committee plans to request that each nominee give a 1-2 minute speech at the November meeting on why they are qualified/should hold the office. Nominees have not been advised prior that a speech is required or may be expected. Our bylaws or standing rules do not have any language to address nominee speeches. 1. The request for nominee speeches is deemed an action item from the Nominations committee, thus requiring the body to vote on the action/recommendation, correct? 2. If the request for nominee speeches passes/is allowed, then once nominations from the floor is concluded and the nominations is closed, all nominees who accepted would be required at the November meeting to give a 1-2 minute speech (regardless to the lack of advanced notice), correct? George Mervosh Posted November 17, 2016 at 05:03 PM Report Share Posted November 17, 2016 at 05:03 PM (edited) 1) Incorrect. All members may speak to a nomination, for up to 10 minutes per, but I wouldn't expect them to last very long in reality 2) Incorrect. As noted, no motion is necessary to speak to a nomination but no one is required to speak at all. 2a) Debating nominations can only occur while it is in order to make them, not after they're closed. Hieu H. Huynh Posted November 17, 2016 at 05:29 PM Report Share Posted November 17, 2016 at 05:29 PM The assembly could adopt a rule regarding the nominee speeches.
