When does a motion passed go into effect?

All,

I received a question as to when passed motions that change or amend the bylaws go into effect. I have always been trained that they are in effect once the meeting is adjourned and therefore not applicable to the current session. Is this correct?

It is certainly proper to offer as part of the motion, a proviso that "and this change shall go into effect upon adjournment of the meeting at which it is adopted," if that is what is desired.

But, if no such proviso is included, the change goes into effect immediately upon the chairs announcement that the motion is passed.
