BPNovum Posted October 11, 2021 at 06:40 PM Report Share Posted October 11, 2021 at 06:40 PM (edited) We are about to have a special board meeting to elect new officers following an annual meeting. It is anticipated there will be a 4-4 tie for the office of president of the board. What steps should be followed to resolve the anticipated tie in the election? Our bylaws do not provide for a solution to this issue. Edited October 11, 2021 at 06:41 PM by BPNovum additional information.
Tom Coronite Posted October 11, 2021 at 06:53 PM Report Share Posted October 11, 2021 at 06:53 PM To resolve an anticipated tie, you could try convincing someone to vote for someone else. To resolve an actual tie vote, vote again. And again if necessary. Perhaps someone will change his mind, a candidate may withdraw, or a third candidate a majority will support might emerge. Tom Coronite Posted October 11, 2021 at 09:01 PM Report Share Posted October 11, 2021 at 09:01 PM Or maybe an unexpected write-in candidate will emerge and everyone can ride the dark horse home early. 😉

Weldon Merritt Posted October 11, 2021 at 11:34 PM Report Share Posted October 11, 2021 at 11:34 PM Surprising things can happen in election, especially when it is by ballot. I recall an instance when a board I was a member of was voting to elect a board member to the executive committee, with two nominated candidates. The vote was still tied after several rounds of voting, so I considered changing my vote. Then I thought that if someone else also changed their vote, we the vote would be tied again, so I abstained instead. That should have resulted in election of the candidate for whom I had not been voting, assuming no one else changed their vote. But to my surprise, the candidate I supported was elected. Obviously, someone else did change their vote.
