dlrabuck Posted September 19, 2012 at 10:38 AM Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 at 10:38 AM A committee of 8 is charged with electing its own chair. The vote resulted in a 4 - 4 tie. What is the appropriate way for the chair to be elected? Where in Roberts Rules is this addressed?
jstackpo Posted September 19, 2012 at 11:01 AM Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 at 11:01 AM Vote again. And again. And again...Eventually someone will cave (just hope that two people don't switch - or abstain - at the same time).RONR: p.
Trina Posted September 19, 2012 at 12:56 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 at 12:56 PM Also, a different candidate can be nominated (during the again. and again. and again... process). Sometimes that is a way to break the impasse. There is no quick-and-easy tie breaker in this situation -- in case that's what you were hoping for. George Mervosh Posted September 19, 2012 at 01:01 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 at 01:01 PM If the committee continues to be at an impasse after doing what John and Trina have mentioned, it's probably best to report this to the body that created/appionted the committee and they can take the steps to appoint a chair unless some bylaw requires your committee elect its own chair.I'm glad I'm not on a committee that can't agree on the first thing they're asked to come to an agreement on.....it could be one long assignment for all of you.
