Guest Guest Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:23 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:23 PM We were having a discussion on a topic up for vote. Due to time constraints, a motion was made to end discussion and move the item to a vote. This motion received a 19 yes to 13 no vote. The then topic up for a vote was voted on and passed (barely). The next day, a member of the assembly pointed out that the motion to end discussion had to be approved by a 2/3 vote. I can't tell from the wording inRobert's Rules if this would be one of the exceptions to points of order needing to be raised immediately or not.Thank you in advance for your feedback. George Mervosh Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:29 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:29 PM In this case the point of order would need be raised at the time the breach of the rules occurred. The exceptions to the timeliness requirement are found on p. 251 and this isn't one of them.
jstackpo Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:31 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:31 PM The (improper) calling of the question by less than a 2/3 vote should have been point-of-ordered at the time the rule infraction took place. But as soon as you went on to vote on the issue at hand, it was too late. The adoption of the issue vote stands. There is no continuing breach.
Chris Harrison Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:42 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2013 at 06:42 PM See Official Interpretation 2006-18 with a focus on the 2nd paragraph in the answer (the question refers to Amend Something Previously Adopted but the concept is still the same in your situation).
