George Mervosh Posted September 30, 2015 at 04:10 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2015 at 04:10 PM There is a motion on the table. . . can a second motion be added? If you mean there is a main motion pending before the assembly, then no, another main motion may not be made, however a proposed amendment to the pending main motion might be in order. Gödel Fan Posted September 30, 2015 at 04:42 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2015 at 04:42 PM If, on the other hand, you mean that a motion has been laid on the table (a motion to lay on the table adopted while it was pending), another motion is then pending, and it is moved to lay that on the table as well, then yes, it is in order, provided that the second motion to lay on the table is in order in isolation. For example, the second motion to lay on the table cannot be made with the intent of killing the motion (just as in any event.) In fact, sometimes a sequence of items is laid on the table, in order to consider a matter first, either because the one desired to reach is more pressing, or because the assembly wants it resolved before the other items. Richard Brown Posted September 30, 2015 at 05:20 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2015 at 05:20 PM There is a motion on the table. . . can a second motion be added? If you mean there is a main motion pending before the assembly, then no, another main motion may not be made, however a proposed amendment to the pending main motion might be in order. And privileged motions, such as motions to adjourn or take a recess, as well as a few others, are in order while a main motion is pending.
