Gary c Tesser Posted October 17, 2017 at 05:16 AM Report Share Posted October 17, 2017 at 05:16 AM If the original motion had been, "to purchase five trucks, and oh yeah, to purchase five trucks," the proposal to divide might have a case. (He could move to amend. Same majority vote, less question of his sanity.)

Guest Who's Coming to Dinner Posted October 17, 2017 at 01:45 PM Report Share Posted October 17, 2017 at 01:45 PM "To purchase 10 trucks" is a unitary motion. It doesn't have any parts to divide. Division of a sum belongs to the realm of arithmetic, not parliamentary procedure.
George Mervosh Posted October 17, 2017 at 02:01 PM Report Share Posted October 17, 2017 at 02:01 PM Although your question has been answered, if there's a possibility that members may want to offer numerous proposals for how many trucks to purchase, the passage on Filling Blanks may be of use to your group. See RONR (11th ed.), p. 162ff
Guest Casper Posted October 17, 2017 at 02:22 PM Report Share Posted October 17, 2017 at 02:22 PM I like the answer that 10 trucks is "unitary motion" by Guest Who CD - but not sure if RONR refers to that manner disallowance of no "parts" to divide ? Filling blanks also seems a useful notion for this . Thanks Casper

Dan Honemann Posted October 17, 2017 at 03:47 PM Report Share Posted October 17, 2017 at 03:47 PM Aside from the fact that no one could possibly read what is said in Section 27 of RONR and believe that the answer to the question asked could be anything other than "of course not!", if a motion "to purchase 5 trucks" is adopted or rejected, another motion "to purchase 5 trucks" will obviously be out of order, since "... an assembly cannot be asked to decide the same, or substantially the same, question twice during one session—except through a motion to reconsider a vote (37) or a motion to rescind an action (35), or in connection with amending something already adopted (see also pp. 74–75)."
