Guest Mr. How do you Handle Posted June 28, 2018 at 05:59 PM Report Share Posted June 28, 2018 at 05:59 PM At a recent Social Club meeting, there was a member who attended that was a Police Officer. He was dressed in full uniform and carrying a firearm. After the meeting a few other member mentioned that they felt uncomfortable or intimidated with him there that way. How should that be handled in the future?

How should that be handled in the future? The same way you'd handle an irrational fear of clowns, I suppose. If enough members fear clowns, adopt a rule banning clowns. Otherwise, the issue would seem to be one that does not require attention.
George Mervosh Posted June 28, 2018 at 06:56 PM Report Share Posted June 28, 2018 at 06:56 PM But you can't ban the member except by the disciplinary process and does your group want to adopt a dress code targeted at one member who isn't doing anything wrong? I agree with Mr. Wynn, time to move on.

This is not a parliamentary question, except that the assembly could adopt any motion requesting anything, but that's only a request. George Mervosh Posted June 28, 2018 at 08:48 PM Report Share Posted June 28, 2018 at 08:48 PM It's probably more dangerous leaving the gun in the car, but, as usual I digress. Off to the 2FP meeting.

I suppose you could, but why? Edited to add: you could also ask those who don't like it to leave.. or someone could talk to him privately and tell him that it makes one or two members nervous and asked if he would mind leaving his gun in the car. Gary Novosielski Posted June 29, 2018 at 04:59 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2018 at 04:59 PM A standing rule banning firearms in general would avoid singling out any individual, or any particular occupation. Based on some meetings I've attended, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
J. J. Posted June 29, 2018 at 05:32 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2018 at 05:32 PM It could be considered a matter a decorum. It breaks no rule in RONR that says that members must be clothed. I'm fairly certain that most societies (excluding nudist groups) could order a member to cover or be removed. There are a few organizations that require male member to wear a jacket and tie.
