GigiA Posted October 26, 2020 at 05:12 PM Report Share Posted October 26, 2020 at 05:12 PM Does anyone know why "precedence" is pronounced Pre-SEED-n's as per RONR 12th Ed 5:8 n2? Where did this pronunciation come from? Is it just an older pronunciation?
Rob Elsman Posted October 26, 2020 at 05:40 PM Report Share Posted October 26, 2020 at 05:40 PM In my area of the country, no one in his right mind would pronounce it that way.

GigiA Posted October 26, 2020 at 08:01 PM Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2020 at 08:01 PM pre-SEED... but I have always pronounced Precedence as PRESS-uh-dence. I have just never heard anyone say pre-SEED-n's other than in a Parliamentary context (and even then, I have heard a lot of folks say PRESS-uh-dence). Just was wondering if there's a cool story or explanation of the different pronunciations. I do like that it does distinguish from precedents, as you noted! Richard Brown Posted October 26, 2020 at 08:12 PM Report Share Posted October 26, 2020 at 08:12 PM I have been taught for about 20 years, from my first meeting at a local NAP unit, that when it comes to the order of precedence of motions, it is pronounced "pre-SEE-dence

That's actually a very good way of explaining it. It is the order of hierarchy of motions... which ones precede others.
