Rob Elsman Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:38 AM Report Share Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:38 AM A motion was made and passed over a year ago. How long is that motion valid? An adopted main motion remains in force until it is rescinded, unless it provides for the termination of its effect. RONR (10th ed.), p. 106, footnote. Gary Novosielski Posted November 15, 2010 at 01:56 AM Report Share Posted November 15, 2010 at 01:56 AM A motion was made and passed over a year ago. How long is that motion valid? As you can see, it's hard to answer without more information. A motion might be in effect a short time: "The last guy out of here tonight has to take out the garbage."Or it might be in effect for quite a while: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...." Guest John Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:08 PM Report Share Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:08 PM Whether or not it has continuing force depends on the nature of the motion. Can you give some details?A motion was made a passed in 2009 to underwrite the cost of an event in Dec. 2010. Dec. 2010 is upon us and there are no funds to underwrite the event. Do we have to go back to the membership and rescind the 2009 motion, or, can we just notify the membership that we cannot comply with the 2009 motion because there are not sufficient funds?
