Guest Walter Kraus Posted August 21, 2014 at 12:55 PM Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 at 12:55 PM Our RV club wants to change its bylaws. Because many members travel and are not readily available to vote, we would like to leave the voting period open for three months. Is this allowable? Transpower Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:19 PM Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:19 PM Yes, if your rules allow it--e.g., voting by e-mail. Of course, ordinarily, a revision to the bylaws requires a special meeting, and only those attending may vote. On the other hand, you would not be able to propose amendments to the revision. So, it's basically going to be an up or down vote.
jstackpo Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:22 PM Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:22 PM Hmm.. I'd have to read your bylaws to give a (more) definitive answer, but...If your bylaws allow voting by mail, then presumably the bylaws authorize someone (the Board?) to set the parameters for voting, which would include the period of time the polls remained open.Strictly, RONR only allows voting in meetings, but you could adopt a "Special Rule of Order" (at a proper meeting) that keeps the polls open for a period of time during which voters could come by, when they are in town, and turn in their votes. Edgar Guest Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:43 PM Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:43 PM Guys, where does it say mail/email voting is being used? Mr. Stackpole suggested a non-mail option: . . . you could adopt a "Special Rule of Order" (at a proper meeting) that keeps the polls open for a period of time during which voters could come by, when they are in town, and turn in their votes. jstackpo Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:47 PM Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 at 01:47 PM I trust this is authorized in the bylaws as it is a form of absentee voting -- p. 423.And if so, you have various security features (like authentication of voters, &c.) in place.
