bobby101 Posted April 13, 2015 at 11:23 AM Report Share Posted April 13, 2015 at 11:23 AM We're about to update our by-laws and want a general statement in the by-laws about RONR's applicability to the by-laws. At the same time we want to keep the RONR reference current. Any suggested general language you can suggest to do this? And, second question--we have the 11th edition, any idea on when the next edition will be coming out? Thank you, bobby101
jstackpo Posted April 13, 2015 at 11:30 AM Report Share Posted April 13, 2015 at 11:30 AM To adopt RONR as your organization's parliamentary authority, the society should insert the following into its bylaws at the appropriate place [RONR (11th ed.), p. 15, ll. 21-26; pp. 580, 588]: Article #Parliamentary Authority“The rules contained in the current edition of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern the Society in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with these bylaws and any special rules of order the Society may adopt.” Of course, another term than “Society” may be substituted that more appropriately describes the particular organization. Pay particular attention to the footnote on page 580 of RONR (11th ed.) if your organization is incorporated. Recent history (since 1970) suggests a 10-year period for new editions. Thank you, bobby101 Since you have the current edition of Robert's Rules of Order, and are about to update your bylaws, you should already have read what is said on pages 570-583. You would have found information concerning the specific provision you refer to on page 580, lines 6-24 (and another example on page 588).
Edgar Guest Posted April 13, 2015 at 12:04 PM Report Share Posted April 13, 2015 at 12:04 PM Since you have the current edition of Robert's Rules of Order . . . you should already have read what is said on pages 570-583. To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, having the Right Book is not the same thing as reading the Right Book.

At Her Bossness' convenience, of course.
