A tie

The top six vote getters are elected.

Yeah....   but..... ONLY if those 6 each got a majority of the votes cast (in this case a ballot with a vote for anyone counts as a "vote cast").

If only a sub-set of the 6 did get a majority they are elected - nobody else is, and you have another round of voting, excluding those who have already won, but adding new nominees if any.   Write-in votes always OK.

What is recomend by Robert Rules if when we count the votes of the directors elected  we have a tie?

There are only 6 positions to be fill and we have 12 candidates. The By Laws has no provision for this.

A majority vote (more than half the votes cast) is require to elect, so anyone with half or less is not elected on that round.

In the case of a directorship, with 6 open seats, any ballot with at least one name on it increases the count of "votes cast" by one, and anyone exceeding half that number is elected.  That may be anywhere from zero people to six people.  Unfilled seats constitute an incomplete election, and trigger another round of voting for the unfilled seats only.

A tie vote is no problem if two candidates are tied for first place, and both have a majority.  There could be a problem if there's a tie to determine the sixth seat, but again, additional rounds of voting are the way to decide it.

In the additional  rounds of voting, you do not drop the candidate with the fewest votes unless your bylaws require it or you have adopted a special rule or a motion to do so in the case of this election.  All of the unelected candidates remain on the ballot for the repeat balloting unless some  withdraw voluntarily.  Even then, members are free to write in the names of those "former" candidates.

And in fact candidates might even be added, since reopening nominations is in order between rounds.
