Guest melinda Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:34 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:34 AM So we have presentations during elections of officers. Is there anything in Robert's Rules that states that a member cannot vote is they are not there for one or more of the presentations? If three people are running for president, and a member is in the restroom for the first candidate's presentation. Can they come back in, watch the other two, and then vote? Hieu H. Huynh Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:43 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:43 AM The member can vote. Being present for presentations is not required to vote.
Guest Melinda Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:54 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:54 AM Would it go against Robert's Rules to make a bylaw stating otherwise?

Benjamin Geiger Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:59 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:59 AM Bylaws supersede RONR. However, I don't think it would be a great idea. There are too many ways to game the system.
Bruce Lages Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:00 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:00 AM Your bylaws can pretty much say whatever you want them to say, as long as they are consistent with a constitution if you have one, and with applicable procedural provisions of state and federal laws. Chris Harrison Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:05 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:05 AM When there is a conflict between the Bylaws and RONR the Bylaws win. But be careful because you all will probably be creating more headaches then solving.
Guest Who's Coming to Dinner Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:04 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:04 AM Taking away the right to vote is antidemocratic and, in my opinion, schoolmarmish when wielded as a punishment for missing the lecture.
